SAFIR 'The Voice of Services'

Digital information collected in the field by health care or police personnel - or presented to them whenever and wherever needed - improves the effectiveness of day-to-day and emergency operations drastically. Unfortunately manipulating a device is often impractical in time-pressure situations and emergency situations. Voice, on the other hand, is the most natural interface, but there is a lack of applications and services that use voice in a reliable and dependable way. The SAFIR project develops Voice interfaces to location services based on the Geodan Movida platform for health care and public order and safety. SAFIR is supported by an R&D grant of the European Commission.

The PHS solution is an application of voice and Geodan Movida. PHS Info assists ambulance (paramedic) personnel. The mobile client receives information from the Movida dispatch center regarding an accident. This information is converted into speech and delivered to the ambulance driver. The incident location is transferred to the navigation software, which calculates the fastest route and starts giving directions by voice.

During the trip the control room is constantly informed about the current location of the vehicle. On arrival a voice notification is generated by Movida, informing the control center. As the mobile client runs on any portable device, communication will also be available outside the ambulance. Paramedics and emergency staff make the triage of the victim by voice commands, while they examine the victim status. This information is available real-time to the control center, together with the current location of the ambulance and the expected time of arrival at the ER department. In this way no precious time is wasted, which gives the people in the hospital extra time to anticipate on the situation and start planning all necessary activities.
