Geo-Office Dordrecht: geo-information component in the mid-office
In the field of electronic services, the Dutch municipality of Dordrecht is still on the first place at the national level. With the E-Government program, the municipality of Dordrecht strives for an even better and more transparent communication with its citizens and companies. One of the projects is E-Government GIS that focuses the provision of location-based information (external and internal; internet and intranet). Geodan IT has developed the geographical components for this, based on Oracle MapViewer.
The customer and his needs
Aiming at a better service provision and more interaction with its citizens, the municipality of Dordrecht will also make a ‘map’ component available on its website and digital forms as part of its e-services. The Geo-Office project has a double purpose:
- Realising a Geo-Office component in the mid-office environment of the internet architecture as part of the e-Government GIS project with functionalities for presenting and ‘fencing’ or drawing spatial objects and locations.
- The implementation of this Geo-Office component and its functionality on all relevant topics in the front-office environment.
The result is an open, flexible, data-independent and manageable geo-components architecture through which the municipality of Dordrecht has a future-stable and modern geo-internet architecture at its disposal.
Solution and functionality
Geodan IT has developed the geographical components that are used for preparing the different intra and internet pages. This group of components can be deployed flexibly within the information infrastructure of the municipality of Dordrecht. The core of these components is the map component; all other components directly or indirectly use this component for making maps through Oracle’s MapViewer technology. Other components are a navigation, legend and fencing component. The figure [PICTURE] shows a combination of the map and the navigation component. Within the context of the project three topics have been elaborated, in close cooperation with the municipality of Dordrecht, using the components:
- zoning plans
- industrial sites
- schools
- services
As regards services, the fencing functionality has also been used so that points, lines and surfaces can also be drawn on the map.
Technical aspects
Besides using Oracle Locator and Oracle’s MapViewer, an important prior condition for the solution was a considerable degree of browser independence. HTML offers complete browser independence, but for performance-related reasons, a combination of standard HTML and JavaScript was chosen for the client. This means that part of the administration, such as maintaining the active tool and the map history is done at the client side so as to limit traffic with the server to a minimum. In practice, the rule of thumb is that communication with the server is necessary only when a user clicks on a map.
