Where are the companies with hazardous substances located in my living environment? You can now find this information also on geographical maps on the website of the municipality of Zoetermeer.
Solution and functionality
On its website, the municipality of Zoetermeer refers to a webmapping application developed by Geodan. The municipality was looking for a user-friendly system for quickly and easily publishing several maps on www.zoetermeer.nl. A service for inhabitants and visitors. Because if you read something about parking, you would like to see the parking areas immediately on the map. Besides parking, several other aspects have been mapped as well, varying from the garbage collection spots and zoning plans to visual art.
Technical aspects
Geodan has developed this application based on MapInfo MapXtreme. The municipality itself can manage and publish maps. Moreover, supporting management applications have been developed in MapBasic, which implies that the update and publication process from Oracle Spatial tables to the webmapping server has been fully automated. Publishing a new map or renewing the existing maps is entirely in the hands of the municipality, and is automated as much as possible. The application is hosted at Geodan.
The municipality of Zoetermeer writes on its own web site:
"The municipality is pleased to inform you on the safety of companies with hazardous substances in Zoetermeer. As a result of major incidents in The Netherlands in the past couple of years, such as the firework disaster in Enschede, all Dutch municipalities are obliged to map the companies where hazardous substances are stored and inform the population accordingly. This way, all inhabitants can understand the safety situation in their living environment."
