Joint delivery service

The door-to-door delivery of newspapers is a typical Dutch phenomenon. However, due to the growing shortage of deliverers, the delivery of daily newspapers has become a problem in many areas in the Netherlands. Therefore, a delivery district management system produces an efficiency gain at the level of delivery districts.

Distribution costs

Hardly anywhere in the world proportionately so many persons are subscribed to one or more newspapers as in the Netherlands. However, due to the growing shortage of deliverers, the delivery of daily newspapers has become a problem in many areas in the country. Moreover, the newspaper distribution costs have increased excessively in recent years.

Street meters, addresses and subscribers

GBB De Nieuwsbrengers (a pilot project of the Dutch newspaper publishers De Telegraaf, NDC, PCM and Wegener) opted for creating a new distribution network up to the district level in the pilot area. For quickly dividing areas into districts, they resorted to Geodan. The starting point was that it had to be possible to deliver newspapers to a certain district within a certain time limit. A delivery district is composed of ‘blocks’. When composing districts, a number of street meters, addresses and subscribers are used to analyse whether the district is big enough. When structuring the districts, it is immediately clear how much larger the district becomes when adding a block.

10 minutes to divide a district

Using the solution implemented by Geodan, it is possible to divide a district in approximately 10 minutes. This was considerably faster than an alternative solution. And because the solution is mainly composed of standard components, it was possible to quickly start with the production activities. This is why GBB opted for the solution Geodan proposed.

MapInfo and GeoStreets

The solution implemented by Geodan consists of MapInfo Professional and the GeoStreets street network and the house number coordinates (based on Andes•Falk). Besides, a MapBasic application was developed in support of the division. The result is a district map.
