P&O Nedlloyd: communication with a map
P&O Nedlloyd is one of the world’s largest suppliers of point-to-point container shipping services. P&O Nedlloyd was looking for an aid to visualise container movements in Europe and the rest of the world on a map. Geodan provided a system to reproduce the data in such a way that it is easy to quickly identify and solve bottlenecks in the logistical process.
Bonuses and penalties
The sales division of P&O Nedlloyd sells containerised transportation on different locations in Europe. This way, the sales department receives a bonus when it fills an empty container and a penalty if transportation is sold on a location where no empty containers are available, because in the latter case empty containers must be taken to that location. It turned out that sales personnel was not really aware of this mechanism, even though the information was available.
Day-to-day business processes
With one central database in which the whole logistical process is stored, P&O Nedlloyd’s data are perfectly stored. The challenge consisted in representing all these data on a map in such a manner that people would actually use those data in their day-to-day business processes. To do so, a map was published that represents the available container space per 2-digit postcode area in Europe.
Europe by 2-digit postcode
After an extensive consultation and test round, P&O Nedlloyd opted for MapInfo Professional, the Europe by 2-digit postcode dataset, and the standard World by country dataset. Using this standard software and data, it is possible to make geographical analyses and publish them on the intranet. For facilitating this process, a small application was developed to generate the required reports.
Intranet reporting
Every week, reports are published on the intranet with the aid of a small application. These reports specify the available capacity of different types of empty containers. Using these reports, P&O Nedlloyd wants to provide its sales department with better information to increase the fill level of its containers.
