Rabobank network analysis: What is the optimum number of bank branches?
As nowadays people go to the bank only once a year, Rabobank Nederland is reviewing its work areas and office network. Geodan IT supports this process by making analyses and reports.
Internet or a bank employee
About 20 years ago, people went to a Rabobank branch approximately once a week. Today, clients go to the bank less than once every year. People prefer banking at home, through the internet and by phone, and today, they can withdraw money anywhere. Still, for other matters, e.g. a mortgage, they prefer to speak personally with a bank employee. This means that requirements of the branch network have changed over the years. Rabobank Nederland is therefore revising its work areas and office network.
Too small work areas
Geodan IT supports and gives advice in this process through analyses and reports. Many of the current work areas are too small. Rabobank can only deliver certain specific services if there are enough clients in the work area so as to employ an expert. Ideal work areas do not only have enough clients, but the boundaries between the work areas should at the same time be natural and socio-economic boundaries and fit in with existing area divisions such as municipalities.
Environment factors
In the current project, for every new work area Geodan prepares a report with a set of maps of the new work area. These maps contain Rabobank-specific data, such as the distribution of Rabobank clients, the Rabobank market penetration and its principal competitors. At the same time, environment factors are used such as the location of competitors, socio-demographic characteristics, the location of new residential areas and the location of the main shopping districts and their catchment area.
Geodan experts
Rabobank Nederland has decided not to develop its own software, geographical data and know-how, but to resort to Geodan’s knowledge. As Geodan has knowledge of the software and also of the availability and possibilities of different types of data, Geodan’s experts can make very thorough analyses. Besides, the activities could be started very quickly. These were important reasons for Rabobank Nederland to outsource this task.
