eEarth: electronic access to earth information for mobile professionals

eEarth is an information system giving mobile, location-aware access to geo-environmental data from boreholes stored in databases of six European geological surveys.

Customer & need

Data repositories of underground data are essential for a variety of land users and constructors. This data is necessary for the construction of houses, factories and roads and the prevention of subsidence and flooding. Geological and environmental information on the subsurface is used both by local authorities and engineering companies in their decision-making processes. Accessibility of information on site, by mobile users, can save time and money during surveys and field operations.

Solution

The eEarth mobile client provides location-aware access to a vast range of borehole data from European Geological Surveys. The information is structured for optimal mobile access and includes maps and borehole data presented in intuitive graphics.

Functionality

The project provides multilingual internet software tools for accessing and translating the geodata from six national databases (United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Czech Republic and the Netherlands). The information is accessible both via Pocket PC but also desktop PC connected to a web-portal. The mobile application allows the user to filter data based on GPS position, to map and navigate, and to select and view detailed borehole data, giving instant access to a large amount of geo-environmental data ‘on the spot’.
