Geodan collaborates with ESRI North East Africa on reconstructing drainage GIS
Amsterdam, December 2007
An old GIS project carried out by Geodan in Egypt recently had its sequel. During the nineties of last century Geodan made a GIS in collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat RIZA (Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management) to be used for the design of underground drainage systems in Egypt. This system was called DrainGIS.
The drainage of agricultural land is an important aspect of water management in Egypt it is necessary in order to be able to reuse water effectively and to keep the soil in good condition. For many years the department for drainage projects in Egypt (EPADP) successfully used DrainGIS that uses such systems as UNIX and ArcInfo. However the time has come for the system to be replaced. Thanks to modern technology, many improvements have been made possible. ESRI North East Africa will make a new GIS for EPADP with the aid of ArcGIS server 9.2.
Geodan went to Cairo to act as consultant. Research was carried out together with users and developers to establish the best way of translating the existing and new system requirements into an efficient new design. The new system is expected to be finished next year.
