What is RSS?
RSS is a format for text files which simplifies the distribution of the content of websites that are updated or ‘refreshed’ frequently. Distribution is done via what is known as an ‘RSS feed’ which contains the header, an image and a brief introductory text for an article. By inputting the address of this feed (always in the form of a URL address) into a so-called ‘feed reader’, the content may be read. You can see if a website has an RSS feed if you see the button above.
Where can I find an RSS reader?
RSS readers are small software programs which allow you to read the content of feeds. These programs are available in all shapes and sizes, from free versions to extensive packages which are available for a fee. The most popular RSS readers are:
- Google Reader (Webdienst, freeware)
- Feedreader (Windows, freeware)
- RSSOwl (Windows/Mac, freeware)
- Netnewswire (Mac)
- Feeddemon (Windows)
You can also add an RSS feed to a start page, such as www.netvibes.com or www.google.com/ig
