Climate Adaptation Atlas: more accurate assessment of the effects of climate change

The client

The Climate Adaptation Atlas (in Dutch) shows where climate effects occur and how these correspond with vulnerable functions (for example, greenhouse horticulture, housing and open ground agriculture). Alterra, Deltares, KNMI, Geodan and TNO, together the Climate Adaptation Services Foundation (CAS), jointly developed the Climate Adaptation Atlas.

For which requirement would this be the solution?

  • Which climate effects (water shortages, excessive rainfall, drought, flooding) will affect your region?
  • There is a need for an insight into the effects of climate change, but also for guidelines to enable (based on those insights) a climate-robust spatial policy to be developed.

Unique attributes of the solution

  • Detailed national overview reports of climate effects.
  • A database which covers the entire country.
  • Visibility of the current situation and climate scenarios in 2050.

How does it work?

In the Climate Adaptation Atlas, information is brought together that can be used to estimate the effects of climate change on the – future – functional uses in an area (such as nature, agriculture and housing). This information consists of maps containing temperature and rainfall data, maps containing data about water shortages, excess water and floods, and maps about salination and heat.

For local councils, water boards (in Dutch) and provinces, the Climate Adaptation Atlas is a logical point of departure when working on the climate-robust policy that is applied, for example, in spatial development strategy. The data can be customised for each region and incorporated in reports. For specific spatial reports, climate workshops with a touch table (Phoenix) are provided. The Climate Adaptation Atlas method has also been successfully applied abroad, for example, in Bangladesh.

What are the benefits?

  • The Climate Adaptation Atlas offers authorities total insight into the climate effects in each region.
  • More sustainable planning because of the insight into the long-term developments in terms of the climate.
  • A building block for regional plans, such as spatial development strategy.
  • Offers guidelines for climate adaptation measures.
