Gouda lets its residents experience future plans with VR

Residents of Gouda now have the opportunity to explore a virtual version of their own living environment long before any ground is broken. Together with partners Centric and Geodan, the municipality is working on virtualizing parts of the city.

In the run-up to the Environment Act, Gouda is using 3D/VR technology to let residents, policymakers and administrators experience plans for a future district well before it is set to be developed. This virtual world is built with Geomagine experience technology.

Allowing stakeholders to experience spatial plans in advance allows them to better estimate their future impact

Armchair planning

We use relevant local data to automatically create a virtual version of the existing situation, before building various different versions of the future there through the intelligent processing of spatial plans. Ultimately, this results in a full future cityscape, including all the traffic and sounds you would expect, which stakeholders can experience with a VR headset, smartphone, tablet or PC on resident evenings and walk-in days, or from their own comfy armchair.

Assessing impact in advance

Allowing stakeholders to experience spatial plans in advance allows them to better estimate their future impact. 3D experiences can help visualize the consequences of different spatial scenarios, and the municipality can use the resulting feedback to optimize the alignment of its plans with all stakeholder interests.

Gouda Rail Zone

First up is the creation of a virtual counterpart of Gouda’s Rail Zone, the connecting area between the train station and the city center - an area of great spatial impact. In the future, this 3D canvas of Gouda will be expanded with new spatial plans and proposals.
